City Says Seven Tickets Remain for Alexandria’s Moss Kendrix Museum Program
The Aug. 23 adults-only program will explore the pioneering public-relations executive’s work and examine how advertising shapes perceptions of Black Americans.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City of Alexandria said Monday afternoon that only seven tickets remained for an upcoming adults-only program exploring the life and work of pioneering public-relations executive Moss H. Kendrix.
The Alexandria Black History Museum will present “Grown-Up Field Trip: Black History Museum” from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, at 902 Wythe St.
Tickets cost $15, with a discounted $12 price for Historic Alexandria members, according to the City’s Aug. 10 Historic Alexandria newsletter.
Exploring Moss Kendrix’s Advertising Legacy
The interactive program will use objects and primary sources from “Moss Kendrix: Reframing the Black Image,” an exhibition examining the Alexandria native’s influence on advertising and public relations.
Participants will consider how stereotypes are created and reinforced through media and how Kendrix’s campaigns challenged prevailing depictions of Black Americans during the Jim Crow era.
Kendrix, who lived from 1917 to 1989, has been called the “Father of Black Public Relations.” His campaigns for companies including Coca-Cola, Ford Motor Co. and Carnation Milk helped change how African Americans were represented in advertising.
In 1948, he established the Moss H. Kendrix Organization in Washington, D.C. The firm marketed products to Black consumers while creating professional opportunities in industries that had often excluded African Americans.
The museum’s Moss Kendrix collection includes more than 900 photographs and an extensive group of business documents, advertisements and other records.
Tickets and Accessibility
The program is designed as a participatory learning experience rather than a traditional museum tour. Activities will include group conversations and hands-on examination of historical material.
The Alexandria Black History Museum is wheelchair accessible. Accommodation requests may be directed to 703-746-4554. Free interpretation and translation services are available through [email protected] or 703-746-3960.
Tickets are available through the City’s Historic Alexandria online shop. Availability may change as reservations are completed.
