Want to Know How Alexandria Really Works? City Academy Applications Are Open
ALEXANDRIA, VA — Ever wonder what happens behind the scenes at City Hall, how Alexandria departments work together, or where residents can have a meaningful voice in local government?
The City of Alexandria is now accepting applications for its Fall 2026 City Academy, a seven-week program designed to give participants a closer look at City government, public services and the relationships among departments, community members and partner agencies.
According to the City’s Academy Programs page, classes will meet on Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m., beginning Oct. 1 and continuing through Nov. 12 at various locations around Alexandria.
Applications are due by Friday, Sept. 18, at 11:59 p.m.
The idea is not simply to explain the organizational chart. The City says the program is intended to help participants understand how local government operates, learn about available services and become more informed and engaged in Alexandria civic life.
That makes the academy particularly useful for residents who are new to Alexandria, people considering service on a board or commission, neighborhood leaders, volunteers, business owners and anyone who has ever followed a City Council debate and wanted a clearer picture of how an issue travels from idea to implementation.
The City offers several academy programs throughout the year, including programs focused on police, fire, the Sheriff’s Office, sustainability and services for older adults. The general City Academy is the broadest introduction to how Alexandria government functions across departments.
