Banksy Takes Center Stage at ALexandria’s Nepenthe Gallery Thursday Night
Hollin Hall gallery will explore the mystery and influence of the anonymous British street artist during its Thursday evening ART + WINE + CHEESE program.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—One of contemporary art’s most recognizable figures is coming into focus at Nepenthe Gallery—although the artist’s identity almost certainly will not.
Nepenthe will host an ART + WINE + CHEESE gallery discussion about Banksy on Thursday, Sept. 10, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the gallery in the Hollin Hall Shopping Center.
The evening will examine the life, work and continuing mystery surrounding the anonymous British artist, whose satirical stencil images have moved from city walls into museums, private collections and major auction houses around the world.
Banksy began creating street art in Bristol, England, during the 1990s and achieved international recognition in the early 2000s. His identity remains unconfirmed, adding another layer of intrigue to work that frequently addresses war, inequality, consumer culture and political power.
A Protester Armed With Flowers
The featured image, “Love Is in the Air,” depicts a masked figure posed as if throwing a weapon—but holding a bouquet of flowers instead. The work is also known as “Flower Thrower” and “Flower Chucker.” Its tension between confrontation and peace helped make it one of Banksy’s best-known images.
Sotheby’s has described the image as part of a tradition of artists using visual art to address urgent political and social issues. Different versions of the composition have appeared as murals, prints and paintings.
Nepenthe will have a framed 23-by-15-inch fine-art print of “Love Is in the Air” available for $450 during the event.
