As of September 15, 2026, volunteers had documented 75 license plate readers inside Alexandria, including 73 Flock Safety cameras and two Motorola Solutions cameras.
The Alexandria Police Department reports operating 61 cameras. That is not necessarily at odds with the map: Finding Flock’s total is a volunteer-generated count of cameras observed within the city, not an official inventory of cameras owned by APD. The map may include cameras operated by others, and its locations can change as volunteers add or correct information.
The cameras have become the center of a growing local debate. Mayor Alyia Gaskins recently told City Council, “I do not think there’s a role for Flock in this community.” Several council members also raised privacy and civil-liberties concerns, while Police Chief Tarrick McGuire described ways the technology has assisted criminal investigations.
The controversy has drawn national attention and prompted the formation of DeFlock ALX, a local group campaigning to remove the cameras. The Zebra previously examined the cameras and the debate in “Have You Been Flocked in Alexandria?”
