ALEXANDRIA, VA — For everyone who has coaxed a sourdough starter through another week, wrestled with a pie crust or dreamed of making better bread, a new destination is taking shape in Old Town.

King Arthur Baking Company is preparing to open a retail store and baking school at 617 King Street this fall. Its Alexandria website confirms the location and season, while a new company interview offers a more tantalizing possibility: shopping and classes in time for holiday baking.

The company has not announced a firm opening date. In a September 30 Q&A with Alexandria Living Magazine, King Arthur said it hopes to welcome customers for the holiday season and will announce opening celebrations later.

The Zebra reported the planned arrival in July. Now, with autumn here, the questions are becoming deliciously practical: What can we buy, what can we learn, and when can we get inside?

A place to shop—and get your hands in the dough

According to King Arthur’s Alexandria announcement, the store will carry ingredients, baking mixes, tools, kitchen appliances and gifts, alongside its class offerings. For home bakers, that means a local place to explore equipment and supplies while having access to instruction.

The company told Alexandria Living that its school will teach bread, pastry and seasonal baking, with instruction suitable for beginners as well as experienced bakers. Plans also include children’s birthday parties, private events and community gatherings. Specific class listings and registration information are still to come.

“King Street just felt like the perfect fit,” the company said in the magazine’s Q&A, citing Old Town’s character and local business community.

King Arthur described Alexandria to the magazine as its first combined retail store and baking school outside Vermont. That is a particular milestone: the company’s location directory also lists an existing school at Washington State University’s Breadlab in Burlington, Washington, as well as its Norwich, Vermont, flagship.

A company that dates to George Washington’s presidency

There is a fitting bit of historical symmetry in a business this old putting down roots in Old Town.

King Arthur traces its beginnings to 1790, when Henry Wood began importing English flour at Boston’s Long Wharf. George Washington was president. According to the company’s historical timeline, the King Arthur flour name arrived in 1896, and the business moved from Boston to Norwich in 1984.

The Vermont bakery and baking education center opened in 2000. In 2020, the company adopted the King Arthur Baking Company name, reflecting a business that had grown well beyond flour.

Its ownership is another part of the story. King Arthur has been 100 percent employee-owned since 2004, after longtime owners Frank and Brinna Sands sold the company to its workers. The company says eligible employees begin earning company stock after a year on the job, giving them a financial stake in its future.

What bakers can do while they wait

Alexandria’s class prices, daily hours and exact opening date remain unannounced in the materials reviewed for this story. The confirmed concept is a store and school; a café or daily counter selling ready-to-eat baked goods has not been confirmed.

There is already a way to get help with a troublesome loaf or stubborn dough. King Arthur’s Baker’s Hotline connects home bakers with professional bakers by phone, email or online chat. Its website also offers recipes and baking guides.

For local opening news, the company directs customers to its Alexandria webpage and a text-update signup. Until the date is set, keep the rolling pin handy.
