$360M Goodwin Living Campus Breaks Ground in Alexandria After Rapid Sellout

All 257 Residences Fully Reserved Prior to Construction on West End Site

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Goodwin Living broke ground on Oct. 7,  on its massive new $360 million senior living campus – Goodwin House Seminary Road. The organization achieved a total sellout of all 257 residences prior to construction.

Civic leaders and business executives gathered on Alexandria’s West End for the event. President and CEO Rob Liebreich praised the strong community backing.

“Welcome to this wonderful Goodwin House Seminary Road groundbreaking, or maybe more appropriate to our ground awakening,” Liebreich said.

Unprecedented Market Demand Sparks Waiting List

Consequently, buyer interest exceeded every initial projection. All residential units were spoken for well ahead of schedule.

In fact, demand remains exceptionally fierce across Northern Virginia. The community now maintains an active waiting list for prospective residents.

Biophilic Architecture Anchors Campus Design

Furthermore, two residential towers will anchor the new property. The development integrates biophilic design into every common space.

As a result, the campus functions as an urban arboretum. Natural light and curated native landscapes connect residents directly with the outdoors.

In addition, residents gain access to specialized wellness spaces. Planned amenities feature a saltwater pool, art studios, and pickleball courts.

West End Alexandria Gains Major Economic Lift

Beyond housing, the project delivers substantial local growth. The new campus will generate 150 permanent jobs on Alexandria’s West End.

Therefore, local businesses will benefit from immediate economic momentum. The private capital investment strengthens the city tax base directly.

City Leadership Backs Age-Friendly Strategic Vision

Similarly, Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins addressed the gathered crowd. She celebrated the immediate pre-construction sellout as an outstanding civic achievement.

“Every single home is already sold. That is huge,” Gaskins stated.

Moreover, Gaskins linked the development directly to municipal policy. The project actively fulfills the goals of Alexandria’s Age-Friendly Plan.

“This project is the very embodiment of that,” Gaskins noted. “It is that plan coming to life.”

Honoring Seven Decades of Community History

Meanwhile,  the Seminary Road parcel holds deep historical roots. In the 1950s, local benefactor Benjamin Smith donated land for faith-based retirement living.

The original site hosted the Hermitage of Northern Virginia in 1961. Goodwin Living acquired the parcel to continue that founding mission.

West End Engagement and Roots

“We are here where our roots are,” said Dr. Cyrillene “C.C.” Clark,  representing Goodwin Living leadership. “Goodwin Living is rooted in Alexandria, and particularly in the West End. What matters is the people, the people who live with us, and all those people with whom we partner.”
