ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria residents have a new opportunity to help shape safety improvements at seven West End intersections along King Street, Seminary Road and South Van Dorn Street.

The City is seeking feedback on concept designs developed after a spring 2025 public comment period. The proposals remain under review.

What is proposed?

The City’s fall 2026 presentation identifies these potential changes:

  • King Street at Dawes Avenue: A new crosswalk and sidewalk, a curb extension, a pedestrian refuge island, streetlights and a no-turn-on-red sign.
  • King Street at 28th Street: New and widened sidewalks, a curb extension, a pedestrian refuge island and a no-turn-on-red sign.
  • King Street at Park Center Drive: Two options include curb extensions, pedestrian refuge islands, an improved bus stop and streetlights.
  • Seminary Road at Mark Center Avenue: Both options include curb extensions, clearer lane markings and a red-light camera. Option 2 also identifies improved left-turn lanes.
  • Seminary Road at Kenmore Avenue/Library Lane: Two options include a new crosswalk and traffic signal, pedestrian refuge islands, curb extensions, an improved bus stop, and a bus-only lane and signal.
  • South Van Dorn Street at South Pickett Street: A pedestrian refuge island, curb extensions, a new shared-use path, improved bike lanes and a no-turn-on-red sign.
  • South Van Dorn Street at Edsall Road: Both options include pedestrian refuge islands, streetlights, a no-turn-on-red sign and a red-light camera. Option 1 also adds bike lanes.

Pedestrian refuge islands provide a place to wait between crossing directions of traffic.

The City anticipates recommended concepts and a public hearing in summer 2027.

The Zebra reported on the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant supporting the seven-intersection safety study in February 2023.

How to participate

Review the designs on the City’s project page, then complete the online feedback form by Friday, November 6, 2026. The City offers its presentation in English, Spanish, Arabic and Amharic, plus English project boards.

Residents can also speak with the project team at the West End Transportation Open House on Thursday, October 29, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Forum at Minnie Howard High School, 3775 West Braddock Road. The event will also cover other West End transportation projects.
