ALEXANDRIA, VA — Stracci Pizza got its start in a trailer. Five years later, the Hume Avenue restaurant is asking Alexandria for three more years to keep a temporary trailer on its property.

The restaurant at 106 Hume Avenue has applied for an administrative special use permit minor amendment to extend use of the trailer for an additional three years. The applicant is Annalisa Cardarelli, and the property is zoned CL (Commercial Low).

The request is a continuation of an existing use, not a proposal to open another restaurant.

A little pizza history

Stracci’s trailer is more than an unusual piece of restaurant equipment. The pizzeria launched during the pandemic from a converted trailer, introducing Alexandria diners to its Roman-style pizza. The Zebra covered the early operation in “A Taste of Rome in a Trailer” in 2021.

The restaurant later developed a welcoming outdoor dining area. Alexandria approved a temporary kitchen trailer and outdoor seating in 2022, and a later proposal contemplated expanding the indoor kitchen. The current filing seeks more time for a temporary trailer, although the application summary does not specify how the trailer is currently being used.

Have something to say? October 29 is the deadline

Residents have until Thursday, October 29, 2026, to submit public comments on application SUP2026-00048. Comments and questions can be directed to city planner Lanning Blaser at [email protected].

Read the application materials on the City of Alexandria website.

For a pizza place that began life on wheels, the request is a reminder that sometimes the road to a permanent neighborhood favorite runs through a parking lot.
