No Residents Injured in Alexandria Apartment Fire, But 14 Homes Left Uninhabitable
One firefighter injured going after the blaze

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Residents were not injured in a frightening Sunday morning apartment fire on South Pickett Street, even as flames spread through part of the building and into its roof.
The October 25, 2026, fire, however, left 14 apartments uninhabitable, displacing residents who are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. One firefighter was injured battling the blaze, according to NBC Washington. The extent of that injury was not reported.
Alexandria firefighters, assisted by Fairfax County fire crews, responded to 251 South Pickett Street at approximately 9:03 a.m. Arriving crews encountered visible flames and smoke coming from the residential building.
According to the Alexandria Fire Department, investigators determined that the fire began in a planter on the balcony of apartment 402, where smoking materials had been improperly discarded. Flames spread into the attic and an adjacent apartment before breaking through the roof.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and conducted extensive salvage and overhaul operations at both 251 and 249 South Pickett Street, checking for remaining fire and addressing damage.
The Alexandria Fire Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office assessed the scene and interviewed residents before concluding that the blaze was accidental. The investigation is now closed.
Although no residents were reported injured, the loss of housing is a serious setback for the families affected by the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced.
A Fire Safety Reminder for Residents
The Alexandria Fire Department urges residents to make certain cigarettes and other smoking materials are completely extinguished before disposal. Smoking materials should be placed in a sturdy, noncombustible container filled with sand or water—never in flowerpots, planters, mulch, or other combustible materials.
What began in a single balcony planter is a reminder of how quickly a preventable fire can spread.
