ALEXANDRIA, VA — Amanda Trotenberg Campbell, a Del Ray dog owner who is eight months pregnant, is asking neighbors to check their security cameras after she says a driver struck her leashed dog, drove over him and fled, leaving him with multiple fractures.

In a post shared in the Del Ray Alexandria Neighbors Facebook group, Campbell said she and her dog, Asher, were crossing Commonwealth Avenue at Del Ray Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, when a red sedan sped through the intersection.

She said the car struck Asher and nearly hit her before driving over the dog and continuing away.

Asher suffered three broken ribs, fractures to a front leg and a knee, and extensive bruising, according to his owner. She said she was not injured.

“It’s a miracle he was small enough to fit under the car and roll as it hit him between the wheels,” she wrote.

A cyclist stepped in to help

According to the owner, a passing cyclist followed the departing car, managed to take a photograph and saw the route it took.

She said the car traveled down Rosecrest before heading south on Russell Road. She is asking residents in that area to look for footage that could help identify the vehicle.

“If you live in that area and have camera footage, it would be greatly appreciated!” she wrote.

The account comes from Campbell’s neighborhood post. Campbell contacted the Alexandria Police Department about the reported incident and was referred to Animal Control. Zebra requested from the Alexandria Police Department an official account of the incident, including whether an investigation is underway, but it has not yet been obtained.
