2018 HOWL-O-WEEN CANINE COSTUME CONTEST AND CALENDAR LAUNCH ON SATURDAY, OCT. 27

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Oct. 3, 2018) — Costumed canines will convene on Saturday, Oct. 27, at “Howl-O-Ween,” the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria’s (AWLA) annual canine costume contest.  This marks the second year the event will be held at Lena’s Wood-Fired Pizza & Tap in Alexandria, on a weekend afternoon to connect with animal-lovers all of ages.

“Howl-O-Ween is one of our most fun and festive ways of connecting with pets and their human companions,” said AWLA Executive Director Megan Webb.  “The event itself may not exactly be spooky, but we think the participants will have a howling good time!”

Costumed canine contestants can enter as a solo act or a themed group of up to three dogs with one handler.  Advance registration is $25 for one costumed entry (individual or group, including one person) and $10 to attend.  Children under the age of 12 can attend for free.  All registrations include 10 free tickets with which attendees can vote for their favorite costumed canines, and the top three costumed entries will receive prizes provided by Alexandria Restaurant Partners.

Howl-O-Ween will also unveil the AWLA’s 2019 photo calendar, featuring Crandon, our 2019 Animal of the Year, and nearly 150 other animals who entered the photo contest.  The 2019 calendar will boast a new look and sleeker, more convenient size, including more full-page photos of top vote recipients.  Event attendees can purchase calendars for $15, or two for $20, and calendar entrants who attend may pick up their complimentary calendar at the event.  Pre-orders can be picked up and calendars will also be available for purchase for $15 or two calendars for $20 at the AWLA at 4101 Eisenhower Ave. beginning Mon., Oct. 29.

Lena’s Wood-Fired Pizza & Tap, at 401 E. Braddock Road, will be donating 15 percent of event food and beverage sales to the AWLA, and dog treats and water will be available for all canine contestants.
