ALEXANDRIA, VA-Martin Luther King Jr. Day is recognized by the federal government as a day of service. It is the only holiday in the country designated as such. Since its first observance 35 years ago, people have helped their fellow citizens to carry on the legacy of a man who not only fought for Black equality but made public service an integral part of his life.
Yesterday, residents at Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads honored Dr. King by participating in various acts of volunteerism. To keep everyone safe, masks were required and social distancing protocols followed.
Some activities included writing letters to military service members, knitting socks for the Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter, making sweaters for children through Knit for Kids, and assembling bags of produce for the Arlington Food Assistance Center.
