Spring2ACTion In Full Swing

Alexandria VA — Spring2ACTion is Alexandria’s Giving Day on April 28, hosted by ACT for Alexandria. Alexandrians come together, uplift one another, and support the organizations that serve our community in the best of times and during challenging times. Spring2ACTion is an indispensable platform for local nonprofits to engage the community and raise critical funds.

Early giving began April 14, and the organizations participating are looking forward to Giving Day, Wednesday, April 28. Last year, ACT for Alexandria raised more than $2 million for local nonprofits.

Jane Collins is the Founder and Executive Director of Heard.

This year, The Zebra Press and Z-TV have partnered with ACT for Alexandria to bring the stories of these nonprofits to Alexandria. In addition to select interviews with some of the nonprofit representatives, community leaders join Z-TV’s Susan Fleischman Live at 5 on Wednesdays in April to discuss their industry’s response to the pandemic, and how they are continuing to serve their constituencies.

This Wednesday, April 21, we look forward to speaking with some amazing business leaders highlighting Spring2ACTion. They will share how Alexandria businesses are giving back to the community we love, and how they are engaging with Spring2ACTion, why they participate, and why giving back locally matters. The guests include Amy Rutherford from Red Barn Mercantile & Penny Post and the Old Town Business Association, Lauren Fisher from Del Ray Psych & Wellness and the Del Ray Business Association, and Brittany Patterson from The Patterson Group.

On April 14, we were joined by Dr. Basim Khan from Neighborhood Health, Patrick Brennan from Communities in Schools and Jennifer Ayers from ALIVE! They shared their perspective from the food and rental assistance (ALIVE!), health (Neighborhood Health), and education/equity (Communities in Schools) on how they have pivoted during COVID, what needs they are currently addressing, and how Spring2ACTion can help address needs moving forward.

The April 7 episode focused on leaders in the arts, who described how they depend on Spring2ACTion to help them meet their goals. While the arts have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic, so many of these organizations have found ways to cope and continue. We were joined by Melinda Kernc of the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, Michelle Kozlak of Arts on the Horizon, and Ulysses James of the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic.

All of these shows can be viewed on our Facebook page, our YouTube channel and on the Zebra website.

Be sure to visit our special Spring2ACTion page on our website, where you can see video interviews and presentations of many of the participating nonprofits.
