Alexandrians Eligible for 20 Percent Discount on Flood Insurance, Thanks to City’s Rating on National System
ALEXANDRIA, VA-Over the last few years, The Zebra has reported extensively on the city’s efforts to resolve flooding issues. In May, the Flood Mitigation Group released its annual report. In two months, the city will use new flood maps provided by FEMA. There is more current good news for residents. Thanks to its continued work, the City of Alexandria has earned a Class 6 rating from the National Flood Insurance Community Rating System (CRS), which means that residents and business owners are eligible to receive a discount of up to 20 percent on flood insurance.
According to FEMA, the CRS “is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management practices.” In addition, the rating is earned through public education, outreach, and disaster preparedness.
The CRS encourages the attainment of three goals: decrease damage on insurable property, support and strengthen the National Flood Insurance Program, and use an all-inclusive approach to floodplan management.
City data shows, as of April 30, there are 1,343 flood insurance policies in Alexandria. To learn more about obtaining a policy, click HERE.
The city became the first community in the state to receive a Class 6 rating in 2013. For certification renewal, every five years, inspections of streams are conducted as well as routine dredging of flood channels, and other mitigation practices.
