Alexandria Changes Flood Mitigation Program Requirement, Allowing More Property Owners to Participate
ALEXANDRIA, VA-The City of Alexandria has updated its Flood Mitigation Grant Program. Late last month, the requirement to show previous flooding was removed. This change allows all property owners to apply for assistance.
An additional change updates the maximum amount of 50/50 matching funding to as much as $25,000 in certain locations. The increase comes as a result of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group’s direction to city staff.
The Zebra Press has reported extensively on flood mitigation efforts. Recently, residents were granted a 20 percent discount on flood insurance.
Since August 2021, when the grant program began, more than 250 applications have been approved, and more than $77,000 has been dispersed to property owners. Yest over the last year, application submissions have dropped. According to an Alexandria eNews bulletin, city staff believe the old requirement to document flooding is partly responsible. Hence, its removal, they believe, will increase the submission of applications.
