Torri Huske Goes for the Gold and Gets It, and Silver to Boot!
Arlington’s pride and joy swims to victory.
Torri Husky, the Stanford University Swim Team and Yorktown High superstar grad earned the gold medal in the Women’s 100m Butterfly yesterday and a silver medal in the Women’s 4×100 Freestyle Relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Torri just beat out USA teammate and UVA student Gretchen Walsh by a photo-finish 0.04 second margin. Torri’s triumphant expression and post-race interview spoke to her own elated astonishment; “I feel like I’m in shock right now. Like I don’t even know how to process it. Like, I feel like I’m going to cry but I’m also smiling.”
Huske missed out on medaling in 2021 at the 2020 Tokyo games, delayed due to COVID, by only 0.01 seconds. Torri trailed for most of the 100 Fly yesterday but closed in on teammate Walsh, who set the Olympic record for the 100 Fly in the semifinals, in the nick of time.
The collegiality of this U.S. swim team is heartwarming. As the National Anthem was set to play Torri invited Gretchen to join her on the gold podium. Now that’s a champion!!!
Torri Huske also has an Alexandria connection, training and competing for the Chinquapin Wahoos at the Old Town pool on Cameron Street and at swimming at the Dowden Terrace Club Pool in the West End. Even had Torri not been a Wahoo and a Dolphin, we couldn’t be more proud and joyful for her success.
