ACT for Alexandria Distributes $20K in Grants to Celebrate 20th Anniversary

The occasion also highlights Welcoming Week. Events planned Sept. 12 to 22

ALEXANDRIA, VA-ACT for Alexandria is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. To honor the milestone,  ACT gave $20,000 in grants as part of Welcoming Week. This annual event, hosted by Welcoming America, recognizes inclusion and the work of people in communities to make them welcoming for everyone.

“We’re thrilled to bring Welcoming Week to Alexandria. This initiative is not just about hosting events, it’s about nurturing a sense of community and connection,” said Brandi Yee, Chief Program Officer at ACT. “These events will serve as a chance for dialogue, understanding, mutual respect and celebrating our community’s diversity.”

Welcoming Week events will take place throughout the city from Sept. 12-22. Grant recipients include:
Adinkra Alliance Institute – You Look Good: An Intercultural Hair Celebration

All Ages Read Together – Popsicles in the Park

The Campagna Center – New Neighbor’s Community Storytime, Sunday, 9/15 from 2-4 p.m. at The Campagna Center, 418 S. Washington Street, Alexandria 22314

Concerned Citizens Network of Alexandria & Landmark Church of Alexandria – West End Community Resource Day – Sunday, 9/22 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Patrick Henry Elementary School, 4643 Taney Avenue, Alexandria 22304

Friends of Guest House – Friends and Family Day – Saturday, 9/14 from noon-3 p.m. at Friends of Guest House, 1 East Luray Avenue, Alexandria 22301

Inspira Dance – Dancing to Connect, Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration – Sunday, 9/15 from 5-9 p.m. at 1322 Prince Street, Alexandria 22314

Kids’ First Years – Kids’ First Years Community Baby Shower – Friday, 9/13 from 10a.m.-noon at William Ramsay Recreation Center, 5650 Sanger Avenue, Alexandria 22311

Northern Virginia Family Service – Belong, Believe, Become: Your Path to Success – Thursday, 9/12 from 2-5p.m. at Hybla Valley Community Center, 7950 Audubon Avenue, Alexandria 22306

Nueva Vida – Sharing Our Latino Cultures Through Dance – Sunday, 9/22 from 2-5p.m. at Market Square Plaza, 300 King Street, Alexandria 22314

Tenant and Workers United – The Bigger We – Saturday, 9/21 at 7 p.m. at TWU, 3801 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria 22305

Since 2004, ACT has given more than $33M to nonprofits through grant programs. In addition, Spring2ACTion has facilitated more than $23M in donations during the annual online giving day.

A graduate of George Mason University, he earned a bachelor's in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. He also studied at the Columbia School of Broadcasting and holds a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Marymount University. He is an alumnus of T.C. Williams High School.
