‘Join or Die’ Screening at Patagonia Old Town on Sunday, Nov. 17, 6:30 pm
Documentary proposes re-igniting communities through club and group participation; Volunteer Alexandria is a community partner for the screening
Alexandria, VA – In today’s societal climate, there is an underlying sense of disengagement. Social media has morphed into an antisocial menace, doing more to divide than unite. After the pandemic, we are spending more time at home and less time out and about. But we can, and MUST, reignite the spark of connection and togetherness in our communities, according to the new documentary, “Join or Die.”
Alexandria residents and friends Elisabeth Auld and Beth Jarvis both read about the new documentary that is based on Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam’s 2000 book, “Bowling Alone.” In his book, Putnam laments the decline of community clubs, groups, and associations, attributing that demise to the downfall of community engagement that has caused our fractious society. As the movie’s promo copy states, “Join or Die” is a film about why you should join a club — and why the fate of America depends on it.
The producers of the documentary have encouraged community screenings to foster connection and communication. Auld and Jarvis reached out to Patagonia Old Town to host the local screening. Patagonia, the outdoor apparel and gear company, has a history of social activism and community engagement. Housed in the former movie theater on King Street, the Patagonia Old Town store is keen on preserving “its beautiful character and value as a performance venue,” according to its website.
Store Manager Luz Buccio added, “Our events shine a light on various environmental and social causes, fostering a sense of unity and purpose. We support grassroots groups year-round through donations, grants, volunteering opportunities, and events such as films, repair workshops, yoga and much more. This theater holds a special place in the hearts of many, and we are committed to honoring its legacy as a beloved community hub!”
The women also reached out to Volunteer Alexandria as a local nonprofit partner for the screening. Executive Director Marion Brunken said, “We are honored to be part of the ‘Join or Die’ screening at Patagonia Old Town. Volunteer Alexandria’s mission is to inspire, mobilize, and connect people to causes, and this film is all about people being part of a group and connecting. Social connections reduce loneliness and are good for your health, but they also lead to change in our communities.”
“Join or Die” has been nominated at various film festivals, including SXSW, Warsaw, and Cleveland, and it won the 2024 Jacksonville Film Festival Jury Award. For more information on the documentary, visit https://www.joinordiefilm.com/.
