Alexandria Celebrates 252 Years Of Firefighting History

Alexandria, VA – Friendship Firehouse Festival returns to Old Town with a day of family-friendly activities, historic exhibits, and opportunities to meet the city’s public safety professionals.

The free event, hosted by the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association in partnership with the Office of Historic Alexandria, will be held from 9 A.M to 2 P.M. on the 100 block of South Alfred Street, directly in front of the historic Friendship Firehouse Museum. Festival attendees can tour the Friendship Firehouse Museum, located at 107 S. Alfred St.

Founded in 1774—two years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence—the Friendship Fire Company was Alexandria’s first volunteer fire company. More than two and a half centuries later, its legacy continues through the annual festival celebrating the city’s rich firefighting heritage.

Inside, visitors will discover a collection of historic firefighting equipment, including the Rodgers Suction Engine(1851) and the beautifully restored Prettyman Hose Carriage(1858). Built by Alexandria craftsman Robert F. Prettyman, the midnight-blue carriage features gilded shields, red-and-gold wheels, and an ornate brass lantern that reflects the craftsmanship of the era.

Alexandria Fire Department trucks and emergency vehicles will be on display, allowing children and adults alike to climb aboard and meet firefighters and emergency personnel. Free toy firefighter helmets will be available while supplies last. Additional activities include water play, fire hose demonstrations, coloring stations, and hands-on opportunities to explore historic firefighting artifacts.

Throughout the morning, live music will entertain guests while local artisans, small businesses, and community organizations showcase their work along South Alfred Street. Food vendors, coffee, and frozen treats will also be available for purchase. Representatives from the Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office will also participate, giving residents the opportunity to connect with members of the city’s public safety community.

The Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association—a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Alexandria’s firefighting history and supporting community education. Today, the annual Friendship Firehouse Festival continues that mission by bringing history to life while celebrating the men and women who have served Alexandria.
