On social media, many people reacted to the news with shock. Some shared memories. One Facebook user said, “I remember when the original Firehook opened on Lee street. I forgot the name [of] the young man but his partner was Kate Jackson, a remarkable woman. They sold it decades ago, but what a great addition to Old Town many years ago.”

In April, the private equity firm Forward Consumer Partners aqcuired the bakery in an effort to support its growth. Financial terms were not disclosed. The acquisition received no further news coverage.

UPDATE: This report has been updated to include the reason for Firehook’s closure.
