Let Loose: Have Fun in Alexandria This Weekend

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching. But before you plan how you will spend three days off, pause a moment and think about the real meaning of Memorial Day. It honors those who gave their lives in service to our country. The fallen made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live how we choose. So whether you are having a barbecue, going to the beach, or just relaxing at home, keep that in mind.

Now…Memorial Day weekend is also the unofficial start of summer! Get out and enjoy the weather. If you are thinking about staying around town, here are some ways to spend your time.

Memorial Day Ceremony

Monday, May 27

11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Versace Plaza/Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial

2701 Commonwealth Avenue

The program pay tribute to Capt. Humbert Roque “Rocky” Versace and 67 other Alexandrians who were MIA or KIA during the Vietnam War. It will also honor all of our nation’s fallen. Attendees will hear patriotic music by the U.S. Army’s Old Guard Fife Band and witness a wreath laying. For more info, CLICK HERE.

Beyond the Battlefield: A Walking Tour of Civil War Alexandria

10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. (Tickets $15 in advance; $20 at the door)

Lee-Fendall House Museum & Gardens

This walking tour will cover 1.75 miles and take you to historic Civil War sites around Old Town. Along the way, you’ll be told stories of soldiers, citizens, and those enslaved. To purchase your tickets early, CLICK HERE.

The 42nd Annual Alexandria Jazz Festival

Monday, May 27

1:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. (Free event; food for purchase)

Waterfront Park

A variety of artists will perform, including the U.S. Army Blues, VERONNEAU, and the Dave Kline Band. Feel free to bring your own chairs, blankets, and food. The weather forecast looks pleasant enough for an afternoon picnic.
