ALEXANDRIA, VA – Do you know someone you consider a Living Legend in Alexandria? Nominations are now open!
The Living Legends of Alexandria is a prestigious honor awarded to individuals who live or work in Alexandria and have made outstanding, lasting contributions that have significantly improved the community’s quality of life and inspired others.
“The idea first sparked in the fall of 2006,” recalls photographer and artist Nina Tisara, founder of Living Legends of Alexandria. “The City and the Gazette Packet approached me for photographs of people who had passed away. Suddenly, it was like a lightbulb went off—just like in the cartoons. I realized that while Alexandria’s past was well-preserved, the stories of those shaping its present were slipping away. I thought, why not celebrate these remarkable people while they’re still with us?”
In 2008, twelve extraordinary Alexandrians were surprised with the news that they had been chosen as the inaugural Living Legends. What began as a simple idea has grown into a lasting tradition: today, more than 159 individuals have been honored for their lasting impact on the community.
