BREAKING: Thunderstorm Causes Widespread Power Outages and Chaos in Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA-A sudden and intense thunderstorm struck Alexandria around 6:00 PM this evening, lasting less than 10 minutes, but leaving behind a trail of significant damage and citywide disruption.
The Harris Teeter supermarket at 4641 Duke Street was plunged into darkness during the storm. According to a store employee, power briefly returned before going out again permanently. “The pole is down,” the employee reported. “Someone needs to assess the damage and bring it back up. If you need to get any shopping done, do it now, the generators are being shut down.”
When looking at the damage, it is not difficult to see that this is a severe issue which will require time to resolve.
Power outages have also hit the entire Shoppes of Foxchase shopping center, where visible storm damage was seen on several storefronts and restaurants. As of this report, no emergency services were present at the scene.

Major roads in the area, including Duke Street and South Pickett Street are without functioning traffic lights, creating a hazardous situation for both drivers and pedestrians. Fallen trees are obstructing lanes, adding to the danger and contributing to massive traffic disruption.
There are currently no reports of injuries, but authorities have yet to arrive to secure the area. Residents are strongly advised to avoid the affected zones until further notice.
This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available..
