Phonics-Focused Tutoring Delivers Record-Setting Reading Gains in Alexandria
Alexandria, VA – Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC) helped 279 students in kindergarten, first, and second grades in Alexandria City Public Schools make extraordinary strides during the 2024-25 school year. After more than 10,000 one-on-one tutoring sessions, 90% of the kids met or exceeded their end-of-year reading benchmark—proof that phonics-based instruction is advancing literary outcomes in the city.
ATC’s success stems from close collaboration with Alexandria schools to deliver phonics-heavy literacy instruction through its Book Buddies program. By explicitly teaching the relationship between sounds and letters, then providing repeated practice with reading and spelling targeted features (like “sh”), tutors give students the personalized support they need to master skills and gain confidence. The results speak for themselves: 97% of Book Buddies made significant reading gains, and 9 out of 10 reached grade-level reading benchmarks
“We’ve read the research—extensive studies, some even based on brain imaging—that proves phonics helps children learn to read,” said ATC Executive Director Lisa Jacobs. “But seeing it firsthand is something else entirely. Over eight months, students transform, not only in skill, but in confidence. Watching a child make that leap is nothing short of thrilling.”
Following last year’s expansion to all 14 Alexandria public elementary schools, ATC is poised to serve even more young readers. With the addition of a kindergarten program at Ferdinand T. Day Elementary this fall, the organization will reach a record 300 students.
More Students = More Tutors Needed
This growth means more volunteers are needed to meet the demand. Just 30 minutes once or twice a week during the school day can change the trajectory of a child’s life. ATC provides all training, materials, and ongoing guidance, making it easier for volunteers to step in and succeed. Tutors and their students really do become Book Buddies, with many volunteers calling it the most fulfilling part of their week.
