Alexandria Updates Potomac River Water Advisory

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The recreational water advisory for the Potomac River remains in effect, according to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). The advisory was first announced on February 13 and currently has no end date.

Here’s what Alexandria residents should know.

Avoid Swimming, Kayaking, and Wading in the Potomac River

VDH continues to advise people and pets to avoid direct contact with the river. This includes:

• Swimming

• Kayaking

• Wading

• Any activity involving contact with river water

Is Alexandria’s Drinking Water Safe?

Yes. Alexandria’s drinking water is safe.

City water sources were not impacted by the spill, and public drinking water remains unaffected.

Water Testing Update

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) collected water samples on February 19 to test for bacteria levels.

• Results are currently pending.

• The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) does not conduct this testing.

• AHD will share updates with the community as soon as results are available.

How is Alexandria responding?

The Alexandria Health Department continues to:

• Advise residents to avoid recreational river activities

• Share community concerns with state officials

• Post warning signs at local water access points

Some waterfront areas, including Jones Point, fall under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service (NPS). AHD has requested signage in those areas as well.

Officials are also monitoring local health data. As of this week, there has been no increase in gastrointestinal illnessesassociated with contaminated water exposure.
