According to results released tonight by the Alexandria Democratic Committee, Marks led the five-candidate field with just under 40 percent of the vote. She earned 1,573 votes in the contest, finishing ahead of Tim Laderach, who received 947 votes. Roberto Gomez followed with 876 votes, while Charles Sumpter collected 467 votes. Cesar Madison Tapia received 112 votes.

Nearly 4,000 Democrats participated in the primary. Of the 3,975 ballots cast, more than 1,500 voters cast ballots at Beatley Library, over 1,200 voted at Chick Armstrong Recreation Center, and just under 1,200 participated online.

Marks, who has lived in Alexandria for more than two decades, is an ACPS parent and progressive activist. During the campaign, she emphasized issues including housing expansion, public education, gun violence prevention, and protections for immigrant communities.

“With strong Democratic leadership, we’ve made meaningful progress in Alexandria,” Marks said in a campaign statement. “I will continue fighting to improve the everyday lives of all Alexandrians.”

Marks is endorsed by Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley, Delegate Alfonso Lopez, Clerk of Court Greg Parks, several School Board members, former Councilmembers Del Pepper and Lonnie Rich, and abortion rights organizations including Vote Pro-Choice and Virginia’s List.

With the primary decided, Marks now advances as the Democratic nominee in the upcoming City Council election.

At this time, her only opponent is Frank Fannon, who announced last week he is running as an Independent.
