Alexandria, VA – AlexRenew says it has already reduced combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into Hooffs Run by 90 percent. The improvement comes ahead of the full completion of the RiverRenew system and represents a significant step towards cleaner, healthier waterways in Alexandria.

“When our newest pumping station is complete and the entire RiverRenew system is operational, we’ll ultimately see a 99% reduction in combined sewer overflows at Hooffs Run,” said Matt Robertson, AlexRenew’s Director of Communications. “It’s encouraging to see how this once-in-a-generation initiative is already helping to reshape the future of Alexandria’s waterways.”

Once complete, the full RiverRenew program will capture and convey approximately 120 million gallons of combined sewage each year, preventing harmful combined sewer overflows from entering the Potomac River and its tributaries. While the program’s remaining components—including the massive waterfront tunnel—are expected to come online in 2026, the early success at Hooffs Run demonstrates the transformative impact the project will have on both the community and the environment.

“We’ve witnessed tremendous support from our community as we enter the final stages of Alexandria’s largest-ever infrastructure project,” Robertson added. “Our new, massive underground pumping station is quickly taking shape at the heart of AlexRenew’s treatment plant, and we’ll be ready to accept and treat millions of gallons of combined sewer flows this year.”
