Alexandria, VA – Do you know someone who has shaped Alexandria for the better? Do you know someone who has shaped Alexandria for the better—someone whose efforts have left a lasting imprint on the city we know today?

These are the people whose work doesn’t just make a difference in the moment but changes the fabric of the community for years to come. Whether through leadership, service, creativity, or quiet dedication, their contributions help define what Alexandria is—and ensure it will never be quite the same because they were part of it.

Now is the time to make sure their story is recognized.

The nomination period is officially open for the 2026 class of Living Legends of Alexandria, with a deadline of May 31.

The organization’s mission is simple but powerful: to identify, honor, and chronicle the lives of individuals whose contributions have had a lasting and meaningful impact on the Alexandria community—people whose work has improved quality of life and continues to inspire others.

“We are actively seeking nominations for the 2026 Living Legends,” said Mary Wadland, president of Living Legends of Alexandria. “This is an opportunity to recognize the people who make this city special—those whose dedication, leadership, and passion have left a lasting mark.”

Past honorees reflect the breadth and spirit of Alexandria itself. From nonprofit leaders and educators to preservationists, artists, civic advocates—and even Olympic athletes—the Legends represent a wide range of contributions that together define the community.

“From nonprofit leadership and education advocacy to historic preservation, the arts, civic engagement, and even Olympic achievement, our Living Legends truly embody the spirit of Alexandria,” Wadland said. “They are individuals whose impact endures.”

The nomination process invites the community to reflect on three key questions:

  • How has the nominee made an exemplary contribution to Alexandria?
  • In what ways has their work improved the quality of life in the city?
  • What is the lasting significance of their efforts, and how will they inspire others?

Nominations are open to anyone who has made a meaningful difference in Alexandria, whether through decades of service or transformative leadership in a particular area.

Community members are encouraged to submit nominations online by visiting alexandrialegends.com and clicking on the nominations link.

“These are the people whose stories deserve to be told,” Wadland added. “If someone comes to mind, don’t wait—take a few minutes to nominate them.”

The deadline to submit nominations is May 31. Visit alexandrialegends.com to complete the nomination form.
