ALEXANDRIA, VA — When the Alexandria Singers take the stage this weekend for their spring concert, they won’t be performing alone.

Approximately 10 residents from The Landing Assisted Living Community are expected to join the chorus on stage, the culmination of an eight-week community singing program that has brought music, memories, laughter, and friendship to residents every Wednesday afternoon.

What began as a simple outreach effort quickly became something more.

Led by the Singers’ dynamic music director, Joe Cerutti, and supported each week by 15 to 20 volunteer performers, the sessions sparked sing-alongs, storytelling, and emotional connections that surprised even longtime participants.

Even residents in memory care knew the words.

Week after week, familiar melodies prompted residents to sing along, share stories from their lives, and reconnect with cherished memories. Songs sparked conversations about childhoods, military service, dances, family traditions, and milestones that might otherwise have remained untold.

The program became a highlight of the week for many residents, proving once again that music can reach places memory sometimes cannot.

“You can see their faces light up,” Cerutti said. “Even residents in memory care know the songs.”

The sessions often produced moments of laughter, tears, and unexpected joy as residents and singers built relationships through music. What started as a weekly activity evolved into a genuine connection between generations and communities.

Now, after eight weeks together, the program is coming full circle.

This Saturday, residents who have spent weeks singing from their seats will have the opportunity to step into the spotlight and perform alongside the Alexandria Singers before a live audience.

For the Alexandria Singers, the collaboration reflects the organization’s commitment to using music not only to entertain but also to serve the community.

For the residents of The Landing, it offers something equally meaningful: the chance to be performers rather than spectators.

And for audience members attending this weekend’s concert, it promises to be a powerful reminder of music’s unique ability to connect people across generations, experiences, and circumstances.
