ALEXANDRIA, VA – A curious new chapter may soon begin at 1510 King Street.

Long Dark House, a Black-owned independent bookstore, says it plans to open in Old Town Alexandria on Sept. 5. The store will focus on horror, science fiction, speculative fiction, and other “strange stories.”

The bookstore will share the space with Madame Coco Emporium, a Filipina-owned gift and chocolate concept from local entrepreneur Meschelle Armstrong. Madame Coco will offer fine chocolates, tea, gifts, fragrance, and curated curiosities.

Together, the two businesses hope to create a new gathering place for readers, writers, artists, makers, and anyone who loves the unusual.

“Independent bookstores are about more than selling books,” said Chanthal Harris, founder of Long Dark House, in the announcement. “They’re places where people find community, discover new voices, and connect through stories.”

According to the announcement, Long Dark House will feature both traditionally published and independent authors. The store also plans to highlight local writers, emerging voices, regional artists, and handmade goods.

In addition, the space plans to host author signings, readings, workshops, themed book clubs, game nights, youth literacy programs, and other community events.

The concept brings together books, chocolate, tea, gifts, and a little mystery under one roof. As a result, the King Street storefront could become one of Old Town’s more unusual shopping and gathering destinations.

More details, including grand opening plans, photos, and programming, are expected closer to the Sept. 5 opening.
