Greene Funeral Home’s Donita Greene Named Virginia Mortician of the Year

Alexandria, VA – Donita Greene, co-owner and executive of Greene Funeral Home, Inc. in Alexandria, has been named the 2026 Mortician of the Year by the Virginia Morticians’ Association (VMA).
The honor was presented during the association’s 98th Annual Convention, held on Juneteenth in Falls Church, recognizing Greene’s decades of professional leadership, compassionate service, and commitment to the funeral profession.
Greene joined the family-owned funeral home in 1998 alongside her late husband, Nelson Greene Jr., and later became majority owner, continuing the business’s long tradition of serving families throughout Northern Virginia. She is licensed as a funeral director in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., and holds the lifetime Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP) designation, one of the profession’s highest credentials.
In addition to her work with families, Greene has spent nearly 20 years as an adjunct professor of Mortuary Science at the Community College of Baltimore County and has served in leadership roles with several national funeral service organizations.
Her commitment to the community includes more than a decade on the board of SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now), service with the Board of Lady Managers at Inova Alexandria Hospital, and recognition by Senior Services of Alexandria for her volunteer contributions.
“This award reflects the collective trust of our peers and the deep gratitude we hold for the community we serve,” Greene said. “We remain committed to walking families through their most difficult moments with dignity, integrity, and grace.”
Founded in 1928, the Virginia Morticians’ Association promotes professional standards, ethics, and continuing education for funeral directors and embalmers across the Commonwealth.
