Alexandria, VA – With back-to-school season quickly approaching, preparing for the daily practicalities of dorm living is a high priority for incoming college students. People new to the dorm lifestyle often wonder how to minimize their waste and prioritize sustainability in the new living situation. Luckily, there are several recommended methods of living in an environmentally conscious way in campus housing.
There are several actions students can take to reduce their energy consumption. For example, students can try air drying clothes rather than using the dorm-provided dryer (which is also a cost-saving strategy). Reducing long showers and air conditioning usage are also points of emphasis.
The next sustainable zone to address is school-provided dining. Traditionally, dining halls on college campuses can be a big source of energy consumption and waste creation. In order to limit this, students can focus on using the washable plates and silverware if they are provided. Limiting the use of single-use plastic utensils and plates is crucial. If compostable or reusable alternatives are offered on campus, those also serve as a great substitute.
Transportation is another point of contention for new college students. From an environmental perspective, it is important to limit the usage of cars. Alternatives include walking, biking, scootering, and public transportation like buses, trolleys, and metros. If using a car is necessary, ridesharing or carpooling is a good alternative to driving alone.
Once incoming students have arrived on campus, they should familiarize themselves with their university’s sustainability infrastructure. Most colleges have a sustainability office that interested students can contact for information on campus-specific details regarding sustainable living, including requirements for composting or recycling in the area. The sustainability office is a great resource for environmentally focused students.
With environmentalism a growing concern among the youth of America, practical advice for this demographic is more important than ever. Many people care about the environment, but feel like there is nothing that they can do to make a difference. That disillusionment is why it is so important to show people, especially young people, that change is possible, no matter how small.
