Hidden Inside Alexandria’s Oldest House Is an Antique Treasure Stash—And It’s All Going Up for Grabs
You won’t believe what one man spent a lifetime secretly collecting behind these historic doors.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Collectors, history lovers, and antique enthusiasts will soon have a rare opportunity in Old Town Alexandria. The Joe Reeder Estate Sale will open Aug. 20–23 at the historic Murray-Dick-Fawcett House. Over the four-day event, visitors can browse authentic antiques, artwork, home décor, and unusual collectibles gathered over a lifetime.

A Friendship Built on History
Wayne Fisher, owner of Wayne Fisher’s American Design at 114 S. Royal Street, organized and staged the sale. Having shared a close friendship with Reeder for many years, Fisher noted that their joint passion for antiques created a lasting bond.

“This is not a typical estate sale,” Fisher said. “Everything is authentic. You won’t find reproductions or cheaply made imports. Skilled craftsmen created these pieces, and each one has a story.”
Craftsmanship and Character
The collection features a broad selection of fine antiques, artwork, folk art, decorative accessories, and quirky treasures. According to Fisher, Reeder selected every piece for its craftsmanship, history, or character, and many objects also carried deep emotional value for their original owners.

Before settling in Alexandria, Fisher studied painting and art history. He shared that the city immediately felt like home, which led him to open his Royal Street shop specializing in authentic furnishings, antiques, and decorative arts for smaller homes and apartments.
The Thrill of the Hunt
Above all, Reeder loved the search for exceptional objects. Fisher playfully joked that his friend suffered from “acquire’s disease.”
“He loved buying things,” Fisher said. “Collectors understand that feeling. You discover something special and simply cannot leave it behind.”
Beyond the shopping, Fisher wants visitors to appreciate the beauty of the collection alongside the history of the house itself.
“I want people to walk through the home and enjoy the experience,” Fisher said. “I hope they leave inspired by both the collection and the setting.”

Welcoming the Next Generation
To make the event accessible, knowledgeable staff will be on hand throughout the sale to answer questions. Because Fisher believes education adds immense value to the event, he wants newcomers to learn about antiques and decorative arts without feeling intimidated.
Additionally, the setting itself holds great significance. The Murray-Dick-Fawcett House stands among Alexandria’s oldest historic homes, and Reeder served as one of its dedicated caretakers for many years. Consequently, Fisher believes the estate sale marks a poignant transition in the property’s history.
“The house now begins a new chapter,” Fisher said. “Joe cared deeply about preserving beautiful things. I hope these treasures continue their stories with new owners.”

A Lasting Legacy
Ultimately, collectors expect to find quality pieces throughout the home. Fisher is confident that buyers will appreciate the authenticity, craftsmanship, and rich history behind every object.
“People who care about beautiful things will enjoy this sale,” he said. “These objects deserve another generation of appreciation.”
