Alexandria Native Kara Lawson Coaches Team USA in Women’s Basketball World Cup Quarterfinal
ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria has another hometown connection to cheer for on the international stage Thursday.
Kara Lawson, an Alexandria native and West Springfield High School graduate, is coaching Team USA as it advances into the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin.
USA Basketball lists Lawson’s hometown as Alexandria, confirming the local connection. Lawson went on to become one of the most recognizable names in women’s basketball as a player, broadcaster and coach before taking on one of the sport’s highest-profile leadership roles.
Team USA finished group play unbeaten at 3-0 and will face Hungary in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, Sept. 10. The game is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. in Berlin, which is 3:30 a.m. Eastern time.
The matchup gives Alexandria-area basketball fans a strong local reason to keep an eye on the tournament as the Americans move deeper into medal contention.
