A British Royal Is Coming to Mount Vernon: Duke of Edinburgh Visits Oct. 1
MOUNT VERNON, VA — A British royal is headed to George Washington’s front porch. Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, will visit Mount Vernon on the morning of Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, as part of a U.S. visit marking America’s 250th anniversary of independence. British Ambassador Sir Christian Turner will accompany him, according to the estate.
Wondering where Edward fits on the family tree? He is King Charles III’s younger brother and the youngest child of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Charles gave him the Duke of Edinburgh title in 2023. The Royal Family says Edward’s work includes supporting the King and championing opportunities for young people.
For neighbors who would rather see Washington’s home than just read about the royal itinerary, Mount Vernon says the estate will remain open to the public on Oct. 1. The announcement does not promise visitors an encounter with the Duke.
What the Duke Will See
According to Mount Vernon’s Sept. 25 announcement, the Duke will tour the new Education Center, the Mansion, a Revolutionary War encampment and the Washington Library. He also will meet historical experts and lay a wreath at George Washington’s Tomb.
A Return Visit
This will be Prince Edward’s second visit to the estate. He previously came to Mount Vernon in 2001, when he was the Earl of Wessex.
Royal visitors have been coming to Washington’s home since 1860, giving the Oct. 1 visit a long historical backdrop.
The visit comes just months after Mount Vernon opened its 21,000-square-foot George Washington: A Revolutionary Life Education Center, designed to bring Washington’s story and the founding era to life through artifacts, multimedia and hands-on exhibits.
For Alexandria-area residents, the visit puts an international spotlight on a historic site just down the George Washington Memorial Parkway. A member of the family that once ruled the American colonies will walk through the first president’s home in the nation’s 250th-anniversary year—a chance to reflect on how much has changed between the two countries since independence.
