Move2Learn Wins $14,000 Grant for Alexandria Students
ALEXANDRIA, VA — A $14,000 grant will help Alexandria students get moving—quite literally—during the school day.
Move2Learn, the Alexandria-based nonprofit that builds movement into classroom learning, has received a 2026 NBCUniversal Local Impact Grant. The organization was one of seven nonprofits selected in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area to share more than $225,000 in unrestricted support from NBC4, Telemundo 44 and Comcast NBCUniversal.
For Move2Learn, the award means continued work with Alexandria City Public Schools—bringing movement-based classroom tools, clubs and social-emotional learning lessons to students from elementary school through high school.
Movement as part of learning
“Movement isn’t a break from learning—it’s a powerful part of learning,” Brooke Sydnor Curran, Move2Learn’s president and CEO, said in announcing the grant. “This grant allows us to continue creating learning environments where students can feel better, focus more and reach their highest potential.”
The nonprofit’s approach is rooted in a simple idea: physical activity can help students regulate emotions, improve focus and remain engaged. Its programs include active seating and other classroom movement tools, movement clubs outside class and Social, Emotional and Academic Learning, or SEAL, lessons that connect movement, feelings and learning.
That practical help matters in a school day that too often asks young people to sit still for long stretches, said Curran, whose organization is based in Alexandria.
One of seven local grantees
Founded in 2018, the NBCUniversal Local Impact Grants program has awarded $23.5 million to 695 nonprofits nationwide. In 2026, it is distributing $2.5 million to organizations in the 11 markets served by NBC- and Telemundo-owned stations. The grants support youth education and empowerment, next-generation storytellers and community engagement.
Move2Learn was founded in 2018 and works with educators and students across ACPS. The $14,000 award is unrestricted, giving the nonprofit flexibility to direct it toward the programs and support most useful to Alexandria classrooms.
“This investment in our work is an investment in students, educators and the future of learning,” Curran said.
