Art Safari Returns Oct. 24: Three Floors of Torpedo Factory Creativity for Kids

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Torpedo Factory Art Center’s annual Art Safari returns from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, with three floors of hands-on art activities, demonstrations, live music and the sort of permission to make a mess that children tend to regard as a basic human right.

The free event is open to all ages at the Torpedo Factory, 105 N. Union St. It is the 32nd year of Art Safari, a longstanding Alexandria family tradition that brings visitors inside working studios and lets professional artists guide budding creators through projects of their own.

More than a craft table

Art Safari is a chance for children and families to explore the building rather than simply pass through it. Artists across all three floors will lead activities and demonstrations, giving youngsters a look at how art is made—and then putting materials in their own hands.

Live music adds to the day, along with ample opportunity to wander through one of the country’s largest collections of working-artists’ studios under one roof. The Torpedo Factory has been part of Alexandria’s waterfront identity for decades; Art Safari is one of its most approachable annual invitations to step inside.

Art Safari is no newcomer to the Alexandria calendar. The longtime Torpedo Factory tradition has spent decades turning the landmark Old Town art center into a hands-on creative playground for children and families. Over the years, young visitors have tried everything from clay and painting to printmaking, fiber art and large collaborative projects—often working side by side with the professional artists who make the Torpedo Factory their creative home.
