Alexandria, VA – A community center calendar can look like a jumble of times, rooms and acronyms. The one at Hybla Valley Community Center tells a more interesting story: a place where children have somewhere to go after school, teens have Friday and Saturday night activities, older adults can stay active and residents can find food, fitness programs, job support and help navigating life’s harder moments.

The center, at 7950 Audubon Ave. in Alexandria, sits behind Costco in the Hybla Valley area. It serves as more than a gym or a meeting place.

Weekday after-school programs offer activities and adult role models for elementary-age children, while the Teens in Action program serves students in grades six through 12. Teen Nights, held Fridays and Saturdays, include open gym, board games, table tennis, karaoke, talent shows and field trips.

For adults, the calendar includes fitness hours, basketball, soccer, table tennis and pickleball. Senior programming includes bingo, outings, knitting, pottery and fitness opportunities, including the Stay Active and Independent for Life program, which focuses on strength, flexibility and balance.

The building also brings several support services under one roof. The Workforce Innovation Skills Hub, known as WISH, helps residents build skills, connect with employers and pursue certifications. The Re-Engagement Center offers mentorship, workforce readiness and educational resources for young adults ages 14 to 24. Fairfax County’s Community Services Board provides mental-health, substance-use and developmental-disability services at the center.

And then there is the practical, immediate work of helping neighbors get through the week. The Capital Area Food Bank hosts a free food distribution on the first Saturday of each month, beginning at 10 a.m. while supplies last. Loving Hands Ministries also offers free food distribution each Saturday.

Upcoming fall events include a Trunk-or-Treat celebration from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 and an animal vaccine and microchip clinic from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 31.

In a fast-growing part of Fairfax County, Hybla Valley Community Center is doing the everyday work that rarely makes big headlines: providing a safe place, a useful connection and sometimes a meal. That is no small thing.
