ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria residents can learn how to find drafts, seal air leaks and lower winter energy costs during two free, hands-on workshops Saturday. The City of Alexandria and My Favorite Fixer will offer sessions from 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 1:30–4 p.m. Oct. 17 at Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Ave. The program is open to renters and condominium owners as well as residents of single-family homes. Space is limited and advance registration is required.

Participants will practice using thermal cameras to locate air leaks and learn how to install caulk, weatherstripping, door sweeps and insulating window film. The workshop will also cover basic insulation and other relatively simple energy-saving improvements. The City notes that thermal cameras are also available for residents to check out through the Alexandria Library, giving participants a way to keep investigating drafts after the class ends.

Each participant will receive a free energy-efficiency kit to take home. The City says weatherization improvements can save households an average of 15 percent on heating and cooling costs.
