Weekend Reminder: Blue Line Stops at Reagan Airport as Alexandria Riders Face Major Detour

Alexandria riders heading toward Rosslyn, Arlington Cemetery, or downtown Washington should build in extra time this weekend.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – If your weekend plans take you from Alexandria toward Rosslyn, Arlington Cemetery, or downtown Washington, the Blue Line will not get you there the usual way.

On Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17-18, Blue Line trains will operate only as far north as Reagan National Airport. Arlington Cemetery, Rosslyn, and Court House stations will be closed while Metro replaces switch timbers, insulators and fasteners.

Yellow Line service is scheduled to operate normally, which gives many Alexandria riders a useful alternative into Washington. Metro will also operate free local shuttle buses connecting Foggy Bottom-GWU, Rosslyn, Arlington Cemetery, and Pentagon, plus an express shuttle between Clarendon and Pentagon from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The timing is especially important because Alexandria rail riders are already entering another major disruption: Amtrak’s First Street Tunnel work begins after Friday service, and VRE trains will not serve Union Station Oct. 19-23. The Zebra’s rail guide explains that separate outage.

Metro’s weekend work means transfers and shuttle rides may add time even when trains are running normally south of Reagan Airport. Riders should check the trip planner shortly before leaving.
