ALEXANDRIA, VA – Carpenter’s Shelter is known for its mission of helping Alexandria’s homeless and formerly homeless population. The belief in that mission starts at the top. Recently, Executive Director Shannon Steene received the David Bradt Nonprofit Leadership Award for his work.
The award, first given in 2018, recognizes leadership in the nonprofit arena. A press release states that “it is meant to help [recipients] create forward momentum for their teams and organizations.”
“I’m humbled by this recognition and look forward to the leadership development that comes as part of the award,” said Steene. “My aim is to fully leverage the opportunity to keep moving Carpenter’s Shelter forward, especially as we are starting the next chapter of our organizational life in the new shelter.”.
Steene, recognized for his unwavering dedication, received praise for his efforts during the pandemic. For example, he secured additional housing for residents to avoid crowding.
Regarding David Bradt, Steene told the Zebra, “It was an honor to meet him (electronically) throughout the interview process and during the awards ceremony.”
Bradt’s family and friends created the award to honor him for all of the work he does in the local community. He is currently Managing Director at Andersen Tax.
The Greater Washington Community Foundation, which helps to fund the award and the David Bradt Nonprofit Education Fund, has a summary of the award on its blog. It calls Bradt a “quietly effective leader and a champion of the Greater Washington region.”
