8th Annual D-Day Commemoration in Alexandria

The Alexandria Caen Sister City in collaboration with the Office of Historic Alexandria will hold the City of Alexandria’s 8th Annual D-Day Commemoration on June 9th. The event is now planned to be held inside City Hall (301 King Street), due to predicted thunderstorms. Enjoy WW2 exhibits, reenactors, 1940’s music and dancing, and community booths in the Vola Lawson Lobby and Sister City Conference Room from 2:30-5 p.m. An official remembrance ceremony with Alexandria elected officials will take place at 3:30. Children are encouraged to attend and all activities are free!
Almost 74 years ago, the largest air, land, and sea invasion in history took place on the beaches of Normandy. Launched by General Dwight D. Eisenhower and including American, British, Canadian, and Free French forces, D-Day, June 6th 1944, was the beginning of the liberation of western Europe.
To honor the veterans and commemorate their heroic acts, the City of Alexandria has proclaimed the month of June as ‘D-Day Commemoration Month.’ The City will hold its 8th Annual D-Day Commemoration events on June 7th and June 9th. The event consists of two programs: a lecture on June 7th at 7 p.m. at the Lyceum and an outdoor public celebration of the WWII era and commemoration of D-Day on Market Square on June 9th from 2:30-5 p.m. All programs are organized by the Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee.
June 7 Lecture-“D-Day: The Decision to Go” by Dr. Aaron George of the Historical Office of the Secretary of Defense
The Lyceum, 201 S. Washington St. 7-9 p.m.
Dr. George’s lecture will describe the enormous effort of planning for the D-Day invasion of Normandy and the days and moments leading up to one of the greatest decisions in military history. Dessert and wine reception to follow. $10 per person. Purchase tickets: www.shop.alexandriava.gov
June 9 Official D-Day Commemoration Ceremony and Fair
Market Square, 301 King St. 2:30-5 p.m.
This outdoor event includes WWII reenactors, period vehicles, 40’s swing music from the band ‘Blue Jazz’ along with exhibition swing dancing and an expected performance by the U.S. Fife and Drums Corps. There will be community booths and a “French Market” with refreshments and crafts for sale. An official remembrance ceremony with Alexandria elected officials will take place at 3:30. Children are encouraged to attend and all activities are free!
The City of Alexandria has shared a Sister City relationship with the city of Caen since 1991. Caen is the capital of Normandy and was devastated in the fighting after D-Day-73% of the city was destroyed. Today, Caen and Alexandria enjoy cultural, educational, and economic cooperation. Throughout the year ACSCC also organizes exchange programs, lectures, children’s programs, and additional events to promote our French-American relationship.
