This New Pinwheel Garden in Alexandria Will Shine Light on Child Abuse

ALEXANDRIA, VA – A new pinwheel garden will be planted Saturday, April 4, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at Charles Hill Park, 300 E. Oxford Avenue in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria.

The public is invited to join in the planting ceremony on April 4. Project Beacon of Hope, which is leading the event, hopes families will bring kids to join elected officials and civic leaders who will be on hand planting pinwheels, which will be provided.

Christopher Thomas, founder of Project Beacon of Hope, says, “April is child abuse prevention month, the perfect time to bring awareness.”

Pinwheels will be provided at the event.

“Pinwheels are the national symbol for child abuse prevention and a representation of the joys of children and the childhood that we want our children to have,” continues Thomas. “Prevent Child Abuse America started the ‘Pinwheels for Prevention’ campaign in 2008 to create a  national effort to change the public’s beliefs and behaviors regarding child abuse and neglect prevention.”

Thomas spearheaded the pinwheel garden idea to bring awareness to Alexandria City. “We want to bring joy to the community while raising awareness and helping those affected by child abuse.”
