The 2017 award winners are:

  • SunTrust Bank is the 2017 Large Business of the Year. SunTrust Bank is a purpose-driven organization dedicated to Lighting the Way to Financial Well-Being and giving back to help build and sustain its communities. As part of their purpose-driven mindset, SunTrust Bank empowers its 24,000 employees to participate in its onUp Together Volunteerism Program. This program provides 8 hours of volunteer time for teammates to support local non-profits and educational institutions. These teammates assist in a variety of causes, including serving on local non-profit boards, participating in community service days, mentoring children and teaching financial literacy. In 2016 SunTrust’s teammates logged 237,000 volunteer hours of which more than 17,000 were in Northern Virginia. In addition to volunteering their time, SunTrust teammates also generously donate funds. As part of the SunTrust Foundation, SunTrust teammates made a financial pledge of more than $6.5 million to support the United Way to help people take steps toward financial confidence. Established in 2008, the Foundation’s grants and activities focus primarily on financial empowerment, but also include education, health and human services, civic improvement and cultural growth. “SunTrust has a long and proud history in the city of Alexandria – from our teammates’ support of organizations like Capital Post, Dunbar Boys and Girls Clubs and Volunteer Alexandria, to the Foundation’s giving of more than $320,000 to non-profits in 2016 in the city of Alexandria,” said Muriel Garr, Senior Vice President, SunTrust Bank Greater Washington. “We are committed to advancing financial well-being in the communities we serve, and we’re honored to receive this recognition.”
