ALEXANDRIA, VA – Alexandria’s annual Tree Lighting ceremony that rings in the holiday season will be a little different this year. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event that usually takes place at Market Square will be held online on Saturday, Nov. 21.
Holding the event virtually will help the city comply with state guidelines in place to limit the spread of the virus.
“This year, we’ll miss gathering around the tree in Market Square, but we can still celebrate together while staying safe,” said Mayor Justin Wilson. “I invite everyone to enjoy this annual Alexandria tradition.”
The Tree Lighting will feature a proclamation from the Town Crier, remarks from the mayor, a message from Santa, and a poem read by Alexandria Poet Laureate KaNikki Jakarta.
