Alexandria, VA—May 29, 2018—The Alexandria Seaport Foundation has appointed Kathleen Seifert as the Alexandria nonprofit’s Executive Director.

In this role, Kathy will lead ASF’s efforts to change lives through the art and science of wooden boatbuilding in its 20-year Apprentice Program and help boost math scores in Alexandria schools and beyond through its middle school education program.

As the Alexandria riverfront becomes the jewel of the region, Kathy is excited to lead the organization that has been, and will continue to be, the heartbeat of the city’s strong maritime history and activity.

“It has been my distinct pleasure to have been associated with ASF for more than 10 years,” Kathy said. “Every day I think about how our organization changes lives, and I am grateful to all of the donors over many years who have helped to make that possible.” Kathy assumes the Executive Director role after more than a decade of service as its chief development officer.

Kathy assumed the Executive Director role on May 1, 2018.

Alexandria Seaport Foundation (ASF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that improves the lives of young people through adult mentoring, project-based learning and the craft of wooden boat building. Founded in 1982 to preserve Alexandria’s maritime heritage, ASF expanded its work in 1993 when the Foundation developed its cornerstone job training program for young adults, the Apprentice Program. In 2011, and in an effort to capture young people before they make destructive life choices, ASF began its Middle School Math Program, a project-based educational program designed to improve math competency in middle school students. ASF maintains and operates the Apprentice Program from The James McIlhaney Seaport Center, the red timber-framed boat house, at 0 Thompsons Alley, on the Potomac River in Old Town Alexandria, VA.
