In May, we hosted the 2019 Business Philanthropy Summit to showcase businesses that make change happen and to inspire others to do the same. Mayor Justin Wilson spoke about the synergy of city, business, and philanthropy working together in Alexandria to address pressing issues such as homelessness, hunger, and sustainability. Philanthropy and volunteerism create a stronger city.

These challenges require collaboration, dedication, and a healthy amount of ambition. Businesses and organizations play a crucial role in overcoming these challenges. Dr. Tim Sands, president of Virginia Tech, stated that each year his student body seems to get stronger because recruiting civic-minded students leads to additional recruitment of more people like them. Sands said these students are focused on making a difference.

Businesses and individuals are needed to help our community, whether by serving on boards and committees, exercising team building with employees, or volunteering on an ongoing basis or just once a year.
