Washington, D.C. – As reported in a February 4, 2019 story by Sara Gilgore in the Washington Business Journal, it’s true. Washington D.C. businesses hired unadoptable cats to keep the rodent population at bay.
The successful nonprofit program, called Blue Collar Cats, started two years ago hoping to partner with a small number of businesses to prove its worth, but it has boomed. In the first year they placed 63 cats, and now there are 182 feral felines standing watch in the District.
The responsibility to feed and care for the cats is on the business owners, but the DC-based Humane Rescue Alliance took care of the spaying and neutering.
Restaurants, bars, coffee shops, apartment buildings and even churches have hired the cats, and the program is so successful as an alternative to feline euthanasia and chemical pest control, that the folks from Blue Collar Cats are going on the road to present the concept to other organizations.
