Alexandria Choral Society Welcomes Cheryl Lovinsky as New Chorus Manager
Longtime musician and nonprofit professional brings both performance experience and organizational know-how to Alexandria’s nearly 90-member chorus.
ALEXANDRIA, VA – There is a lot that happens before a choir ever sings its first note for an audience – auditions, schedules, rehearsal logistics, communications and countless details behind the scenes. The Alexandria Choral Society has tapped someone who understands both sides of that equation.
The Alexandria Choral Society announced Sept. 28 that Cheryl Lovinsky has joined the organization as its new Chorus Manager. Lovinsky began the role Aug. 3 and brings a combination of nonprofit administration experience and a lifelong involvement in music.
As Chorus Manager, Lovinsky oversees the day-to-day operations of the nearly 90-member chorus, including auditions, singer communications and concert-season logistics. According to ACS, when she attended her first full rehearsal in the new role, she told the singers her goal was straightforward: keep things orderly behind the scenes so performers can concentrate on making music.
A Musician Who Knows the View From the Chorus
Lovinsky comes to ACS after a career in direct-response fundraising at AARP Foundation, work that the organization says strengthened the systems and organizational skills she now brings to the chorus. She also serves on the board of the Direct Marketing Association of Washington.
But she is hardly a stranger to the stage. A lifelong musician, Lovinsky plays horn in local orchestras and chamber ensembles. She has sung with the Baltimore Symphony Chorus, the Alexandria Singers and the Trinity Choir of Alfred Street Baptist Church, with whom she toured Europe.
That experience as a performer gives her an unusually useful perspective for an administrative role: she knows firsthand what singers need in order to do their best work.
Lovinsky has also helped arts nonprofits with governance and board development, including drafting organizational bylaws and supporting organizations such as Bach in Baltimore and Arch Angel Production in New Jersey.
“We are delighted to welcome Cheryl to the Alexandria Choral Society family,” Artistic Director Kathryn Harsha said in the announcement. “Her blend of musical knowledge and organizational skill is exactly what we need as we head into an exciting new season. She understands the behind-the-scenes work that makes great performances possible, and we’re thrilled to have her on board.”

For more than 50 years, the Alexandria Choral Society has presented vocal music ranging from Renaissance works to modern American compositions, chamber music and major works for chorus and orchestra.
