Storytime: Alexandria Sheriffs Are Reading to Kids Online

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Last Wednesday, Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne looked into the camera and launched the department’s new Storytime for Students online series saying, “I’m going to read a book that I loved reading to my three daughters,” and with a glint like Santa’s in his eye and an affable and magnetic smile, he began telling the story of The Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman.

The Alexandia Sheriff’s Department routinely reaches out to kids since several deputies serve as liaisons to the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) elementary schools.

“They would regularly stop by to join students for lunch, take part in programs like reading events and career days, and also do security checks,” says Amy Bertsch, Communications Specialist at the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office.

“Since the schools are closed, deputies are now going to be reading books remotely to help stay connected to the kids. Sheriff Lawhorne did the first one on Wednesday and now each Wednesday evening, another deputy will read a new book.”
